The custom neon sign market has exploded, and with it comes a wide range of quality — from premium craftsmanship to flimsy imports that look nothing like the product photos. Before you spend your money, here are seven essential things to evaluate before placing an order.
1. LED Neon vs. Glass Neon — Know What You're Getting
Many listings simply say "neon sign" without clarifying the technology. LED neon (flex neon) and traditional glass neon are very different products with different price points, maintenance needs, and aesthetics. Confirm with the seller which type you're buying. If no gas type (neon, argon) is mentioned and the price is low, it's almost certainly LED neon — which is fine, but you should know upfront.
2. Check the Backing Material
LED neon signs are mounted on a backing that holds the sign's shape and provides the mounting surface. Common materials include:
- Clear acrylic: Virtually invisible — the neon appears to float on the wall. Premium option.
- Black or white acrylic: More visible but still clean and professional.
- MDF board: Cheaper, heavier, can be prone to moisture damage. Generally lower quality.
For the best aesthetic, opt for clear acrylic backing whenever possible.
3. Ask About Color Accuracy
Colors in product photos often look more vivid or slightly different than the real item. If you're matching a specific brand color, ask the manufacturer for a color chart or swatch reference. A good custom sign maker will tell you honestly which colors are achievable and which aren't.
4. Verify the IP Rating for Your Intended Location
IP (Ingress Protection) ratings indicate how well a sign is sealed against dust and water. This matters enormously if your sign will be near moisture:
- IP20: Indoor use only — no moisture protection.
- IP44: Splash-resistant — suitable for bathrooms or covered outdoor areas.
- IP65 or higher: Fully weatherproof — suitable for exposed outdoor use.
Using an indoor-rated sign in an outdoor setting will damage it quickly and may create safety risks.
5. Confirm What's Included in the Price
Some listings show a low base price but charge separately for the power adapter, dimmer switch, hanging hardware, or even the mounting holes. Before finalizing your order, confirm exactly what's in the box:
- Power adapter (and is it compatible with your country's plug and voltage?)
- Dimmer switch or remote
- Mounting screws, standoffs, or hanging wire
- Cable management clips
6. Request a Digital Proof
Any reputable custom sign maker will provide a digital proof — a mockup showing exactly how your sign will look — before production begins. This is your opportunity to check font choice, spacing, proportions, and color. Never approve production without seeing a proof first.
7. Understand the Warranty and Return Policy
A quality LED neon sign should come with at least a 12-month warranty covering manufacturing defects. Understand the process for claiming warranty service — especially if ordering from an overseas manufacturer. Also confirm: if the sign arrives damaged, who covers the return shipping cost?
